How to Appeal SASSA SRD 2026 — Step-by-Step Online Guide

Updated April 2026

You can appeal a declined SASSA SRD decision online at srd.sassa.gov.za in under 5 minutes. Here is the exact process — what to click, what to select, and what happens after you submit.

The appeal deadline is 90 days from the date of the Declined decision. Do not wait.

Before You Appeal — What You Need

  • Your 13-digit South African ID number
  • The phone number you used when you applied for SRD
  • The month(s) you want to appeal — each declined month requires a separate appeal
  • Your appeal must be submitted within 90 days of each specific declined decision

You do not need to upload any documents for an online appeal. SASSA cross-checks information internally.

How to Submit a SASSA SRD Appeal Online — Step by Step

Step 1: Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za

Step 2: On the homepage, look for the “Submit an Appeal” or “Appeals” option. It may also be accessible from your application status screen.

Step 3: Enter your 13-digit ID number in the field provided

Step 4: Enter your registered cellphone number — this must be the same number linked to your SRD application

Step 5: An OTP (one-time PIN) will be sent to your registered phone. Enter it to verify your identity.

Step 6: Your declined months will be listed. Select the month you want to appeal.

Step 7: Choose your reason for appeal from the options provided. Select the most accurate reason — SASSA uses this to route your appeal to the correct reviewer.

Step 8: Add any supporting notes in the optional text field if you have additional context.

Step 9: Click Submit. You will immediately receive an appeal reference number. Save or screenshot this number — you will need it to track your appeal.

Your appeal is submitted. The status will change to “Appeal Submitted” and SASSA has 60–90 days to review it.

What Reasons Can I Give for My SASSA Appeal?

Select the reason that best describes why you believe the decision was incorrect:

ReasonWhen to Use It
I disagree with the outcomeGeneral disagreement when you don’t know the specific cause
My income was incorrectly assessedSARS or UIF showed income you did not earn
My identity verification failed incorrectlyYour ID is valid but SASSA couldn’t verify it
I did not have an existing grant at the timeAnother SASSA grant was incorrectly linked to your ID
OtherAny other valid reason

Choosing an accurate reason helps SASSA’s appeals officer understand your case and may speed up the review.

Can I Appeal by Phone or In Person?

By phone: Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 (free call). A SASSA agent can log an appeal on your behalf. Have your ID number and reference number ready.

In person: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your original ID document and registered phone number. Ask the agent to log your appeal and get a written reference number.

Online is recommended — it is faster, you get an immediate reference number, and you can track the status yourself.

What Happens After You Submit Your Appeal?

  1. Immediate: Reference number issued. Status shows “Appeal Submitted.”

  2. Within 60–90 days: SASSA’s independent appeals officer reviews your case and the information on file

  3. Outcome (one of two):

    • Approved — your appeal was successful. SASSA will process payment for the appealed month. This can take 2–4 weeks to arrive in your bank account.
    • Unsuccessful — the original decision was upheld. You can escalate to the Independent Tribunal.

Check your appeal outcome at srd.sassa.gov.za. SASSA does not send SMS notifications for appeal outcomes — you must check the portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I appeal multiple months at once?

No — each declined month requires a separate appeal submission. If you were declined for January, February, and March, you need to submit three separate appeals. Each is reviewed and decided independently.

What is the deadline to appeal a SASSA SRD decision?

The deadline is 90 days from the date of the specific Declined decision. The clock starts on the date SASSA declined that month — not the date you found out. Check srd.sassa.gov.za to confirm your decline dates.

Do I need documents to appeal?

No documents are required for an online SASSA SRD appeal. SASSA’s appeals officer checks the original information internally. For in-person appeals, bring your ID and any supporting documents (such as SARS statements if income was incorrectly flagged).

Will appealing affect my current SRD application?

No. An appeal reviews a past Declined decision only — it has no effect on your current ongoing application or any future approvals.
