After submitting a SASSA SRD appeal, you can track its status online at srd.sassa.gov.za. Your appeal status will show as Submitted, Under Review, or a final outcome — Approved or Unsuccessful.
SASSA does not send SMS notifications for appeal outcomes. You must check the portal yourself.
How to Check Your SASSA Appeal Status Online
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za
- Log in with your 13-digit ID number and registered phone number
- Enter the OTP sent to your phone

What Do SASSA Appeal Status Messages Mean?
| Status | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|
| Appeal Submitted | Your appeal has been received and logged | Wait — no action needed |
| Under Review / Pending | An appeals officer is actively reviewing your case | Wait — do not resubmit |
| Approved | Your appeal was successful | Payment will be processed within 2–4 weeks |
| Unsuccessful | The original Declined decision was upheld | Escalate to the Independent Tribunal |
⚠️ “Appeal Pending” does NOT mean your appeal failed. It means SASSA is still processing it. Resubmitting the same appeal will NOT speed up the process and may create confusion in the system.
How Long Does a SASSA Appeal Take?
SASSA’s official processing time for SRD appeals is 60 to 90 days from the date of submission.
| Period | What to Expect |
|---|
| 0–30 days | Status shows “Submitted” |
| 30–60 days | Status may change to “Under Review” |
| 60–90 days | Final outcome (Approved or Unsuccessful) |
| 90+ days with no outcome | Contact SASSA — your appeal may be stalled |
During peak periods (after the April annual grant increase), processing times can extend beyond 90 days. If your appeal has not been resolved after 90 days, contact SASSA directly.
What to Do If Your Appeal Status Has Not Changed
If your appeal status shows “Submitted” or “Pending” for more than 90 days without a final outcome:
Step 1: Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 (free call, Monday–Friday). Quote your appeal reference number.
Step 2: WhatsApp SASSA on 082 046 8553 — send your ID number and state that your appeal has not been resolved after 90 days.
Step 3: Visit your nearest SASSA office with your original ID and your appeal reference number. Ask for an update and request it in writing if possible.
What Happens If Your Appeal Is Approved?
If your appeal status changes to Approved:
- SASSA will process payment for the specific month(s) covered by the successful appeal
- Payment typically arrives in your registered bank account within 2–4 weeks of the Approved outcome
- The payment covers the R370 for each successfully appealed month — if you appealed multiple months and all were approved, you may receive several months’ worth in one transfer
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does SASSA take to process an appeal?
SASSA’s official timeline is 60–90 days from the date of submission. In practice, resolution can take up to 90 days or slightly longer during busy periods. Check the portal regularly and contact SASSA if no resolution after 90 days.
What does “Appeal Pending” mean?
Appeal Pending (or Under Review) means SASSA is still processing your appeal. It is a positive sign — your appeal has not been rejected. Wait for the outcome and do not resubmit.
Can I check my appeal status without a reference number?
Yes. Log in to srd.sassa.gov.za with your ID number and registered phone number — your appeal status is linked to your ID, not only the reference number. However, keep your reference number as it speeds up phone or in-person enquiries.
What if my appeal is unsuccessful?
If your SASSA appeal outcome is Unsuccessful, your next step is to escalate to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). See the Independent Tribunal guide for the full process.
