What is the R624 income threshold?

To qualify for the SRD R370 grant, your total income from all sources combined must be R624 or less per month. This figure equals the Food Poverty Line as set by Statistics South Africa. SASSA applies this test every month — your income is re-checked when you reapply.

How does SASSA verify your income?

SARS (South African Revenue Service)

Checks PAYE salary records and tax submissions. If your employer deducts PAYE, SASSA will see your salary.

UIF database (Department of Labour)

Checks if you are currently receiving unemployment payments or if your employer is contributing UIF on your behalf.

NSFAS database

Checks if you receive student financial aid. Bursary income counts towards the means test.

Government Payroll (PERSAL)

Checks if you are employed by national or provincial government, including EPWP workers and community workers.

SASSA grants database

Checks if you already receive any other SASSA grant. Receiving one disqualifies you from SRD.
