A SASSA SRD status of Declined means your application was not approved for the current month. This does not mean you are permanently disqualified — you can appeal within 90 days, and your status may change automatically next month if your circumstances change.
Declined and Not Approved mean the same thing — the wording differs depending on which platform you use to check.
What Does SASSA Declined Status Mean?
Declined means SASSA completed its monthly verification checks and found something that disqualifies you from receiving the R370 SRD grant this month. It is a monthly decision, not a permanent ban.
Important facts:
- A Declined result is specific to the current month — next month’s verification starts fresh
- You have 90 days from the decline date to submit a formal appeal
- “Declined” on the portal and “Not Approved” on WhatsApp or USSD mean the same outcome
- You do not need to reapply — your application remains in the system
Common Reasons Your SASSA SRD Was Declined
Income Detected by SARS
SASSA cross-checks your ID number against SARS records every month. If SARS has recorded income above the SRD means test threshold (currently R624 per month for most applicants), your application will be declined.
This can happen even if you worked briefly during the month, received a once-off payment, or if there is a data error in the SARS database.
UIF Contributions Detected
If UIF records show you are receiving UIF benefits or made recent UIF contributions, SASSA will decline your application — UIF benefits indicate active employment.
Existing SASSA Grant Detected
You cannot receive the SRD R370 grant if you already receive any other SASSA social grant. If the system finds an Old Age, Disability, Child Support, or any other grant linked to your ID, your SRD application will be declined.
For more detail, see the existing grant detected guide.
NSFAS Funding Detected
If you receive a NSFAS bursary or student allowance, SASSA treats this as financial support and may decline your SRD application.
Identity Verification Failed
If SASSA cannot confirm your identity against the Department of Home Affairs database, your application may move to Declined rather than staying Pending. See the identity verification failed guide for how to fix this.
Age Does Not Qualify
The SRD grant is for adults aged 18 to 59. If your ID indicates you are under 18 or 60 and older (the age for the Older Persons Grant), your application will be declined.
Non-Compliant Banking Details
If your banking details cannot be verified — account name does not match your ID, account is closed, or account is under someone else’s name — your application may be declined after several verification failures.
Is Declined the Same as Not Approved?
Yes. Declined and Not Approved are the same outcome with different labels:
| Platform | Wording Used |
|---|
| srd.sassa.gov.za (web portal) | Declined |
| WhatsApp (082 046 8553) | Not Approved |
| USSD (1203210#) | Not Approved |
| SASSA Call Centre | Declined |
If you see either term, the same 90-day appeal window applies.
What to Do When Your SASSA Status Is Declined
Step 1: Read the reason shown on the portal
Log in at srd.sassa.gov.za and check whether a specific decline reason is listed next to your status. Not all portals show the reason, but the web portal often does.
Step 2: Check whether the reason is correct
- If income was detected but you are not employed — this may be a SARS database error
- If an existing grant was detected but you do not receive one — contact SASSA to dispute it
- If UIF was detected but you have not received UIF — request a UIF statement at any labour centre
Step 3: Submit an appeal within 90 days
If you believe the decline reason is incorrect, you have the right to appeal. See the step-by-step appeal guide for the full process.
⚠️ The appeal deadline is 90 days from the date of the decline decision. After 90 days, you lose the right to appeal for that month.
How to Appeal a Declined SASSA SRD Grant
Appeals are free and can be submitted:
- Online: at srd.sassa.gov.za under the “Appeals” section
- In person: at any SASSA office with your ID and supporting documents
- Via WhatsApp: in some cases through 082 046 8553
For the full step-by-step process, see the how to appeal a declined SASSA SRD grant guide.
Can a Declined Status Change to Approved?
Yes — in two ways:
-
Next month’s re-evaluation: SASSA re-checks all applicants every month. If the reason for your decline is no longer present (e.g., income stopped, UIF ended), you may be approved next month without any action from you.
-
Successful appeal: If your appeal is upheld, SASSA will approve your application and pay you from the original date of decline. This means you could receive several months of back payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reapply after being declined?
You do not need to reapply — your existing application is automatically re-evaluated every month. If you submit a new application, it creates a duplicate and may cause additional delays. Rather than reapplying, submit an appeal if you believe the decline is incorrect.
How long do I have to appeal a declined status?
You have 90 days from the date of the decline decision to submit an appeal. After 90 days, the appeal window closes for that specific month’s decision.
If SARS has incorrect income records against your ID — for example, from a former employer who did not update their records — you will need to resolve this with SARS directly. Request a SARS tax statement, confirm there is an error, and submit this as supporting documentation with your SASSA appeal.
Will I get back pay if my appeal is successful?
Yes. If your appeal is successful, SASSA will pay you from the original date of decline. This can mean receiving two or more months of back payments in a single transfer, depending on how long the appeal process took.
What is the difference between Declined and Pending?
Declined is a final decision for the month — SASSA completed its checks and found a disqualifying factor. Pending means SASSA is still running its checks and has not yet made a decision. You can appeal Declined; you cannot appeal Pending.
