SASSA Status Pending — What It Means & What to Do 2026

Updated April 2026

A SASSA SRD status of Pending means your application is still being processed. SASSA is checking your details against SARS, Home Affairs, UIF, and banking records — you do not need to do anything yet.

Pending is the most common SRD status and does NOT mean you have been rejected.

What Does a Pending SASSA Status Mean?

Pending means SASSA has received your application and is currently verifying it against five government databases. Until all checks pass, your application cannot be approved or declined.

Roughly 80% of SRD applicants see Pending at some point in the monthly cycle — it is normal, not a sign of a problem.

Key things to know:

  • Pending is not the same as Declined — you have not been rejected
  • Pending is not the same as Not Approved — your application is still active
  • Most applicants move from Pending to Approved or Declined between the 10th and 20th of each month

What Does SASSA Check When Your Status Is Pending?

SASSA runs your application through five official verification checks before releasing any payment:

CheckWhat SASSA VerifiesWhat Causes Delay
Department of Home AffairsYour SA ID number is valid and belongs to youID number errors, database mismatch
SARSYour income is below the SRD means test thresholdIncome records, tax returns
UIFYou are not currently receiving UIF benefitsRecent employment records
Existing grants databaseYou do not already receive another SASSA grantDouble-registration detection
Banking detailsYour account is active and registered in your nameNew accounts, account name mismatch

Any single mismatch keeps your status at Pending until that specific check resolves.

How Long Does SASSA Pending Status Last?

The time Pending lasts depends on whether you are a new or returning applicant:

Application StageTypical Wait Time
New application (first time)1–3 monthly processing cycles
Renewal / reconfirmationUsually within the same month
After changing banking details3–10 business days additional
After updating identity details5–15 business days additional

SASSA processes applications in monthly batches. Status updates happen between the 10th and 20th of each month. Check your status after the 15th for the most up-to-date result.

⚠️ Do NOT reapply while your status is Pending. Reapplying cancels your current application and restarts the queue — extending your wait by at least one full month.

Do I Need to Do Anything When My Status Is Pending?

In most cases, no action is needed. SASSA will complete its checks and update your status automatically.

What you should do:

  1. Check your status again after the 15th of the month at srd.sassa.gov.za using your 13-digit ID number and registered phone number
  2. Ensure your contact details are still correct — SASSA uses your registered phone number to send payment SMS notifications
  3. Do not submit a new application — this resets the process

What you should NOT do:

  • Do not reapply
  • Do not call SASSA repeatedly in the first two weeks of the month — verification is still in progress
  • Do not pay anyone claiming to speed up your application — this is a scam

When Will My Status Change from Pending?

SASSA processes SRD applications in monthly batches, typically between the 10th and 20th of each month. Your Pending status will change to one of three outcomes:

  • Approved — your grant has been approved for this month. You will receive a Pay Day date at srd.sassa.gov.za
  • Declined / Not Approved — SASSA found something that disqualifies you this month. You can appeal within 90 days
  • Pending again — verification could not be completed. Your application rolls over to the next month’s batch

If you have been Pending for more than two full monthly cycles, move to the troubleshooting steps below.

My Status Has Been Pending for 3+ Months — What Do I Do?

If your status has shown Pending for three or more consecutive months without changing, follow these steps:

  1. Confirm your application reference number — log in at srd.sassa.gov.za and save it
  2. Check if there is an identity verification flag — look for an “Identity Verification” link on the portal and complete it if available (see the identity verification failed guide)
  3. Call SASSA on the toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11 (free from any South African phone)
  4. WhatsApp SASSA: send your ID number and query to 082 046 8553
  5. Visit your nearest SASSA office with your original ID document and phone number if calls do not resolve the issue

Tip: When calling SASSA, have your 13-digit ID number, reference number, and registered phone number ready. This speeds up the process significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Pending mean I will get paid?

Pending does not guarantee payment, but it does not mean rejection either. It means SASSA is still verifying your application. Most applicants who start as Pending either move to Approved or Declined by the 20th of the month.

How long does SASSA Pending status take?

For new applications, Pending can last 1–3 monthly processing cycles. For renewals, it usually resolves within the same month. Status updates happen between the 10th and 20th of each month — check back after the 15th.

Why is my SASSA status still pending after 2 months?

After two months of Pending, there is likely a specific flag on your application — most commonly an identity verification issue or a banking details mismatch. Check for an identity verification link at srd.sassa.gov.za, then contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 if the problem persists.

Can I appeal when my status is Pending?

No. You can only appeal a Declined or Not Approved result. Pending means your application is still being reviewed. Wait for a final decision before considering an appeal.

Is Pending different from Not Approved?

Yes. Pending means your application is still being processed — it has not been decided. Not Approved means a final decision has been made and your application was unsuccessful for that month. You can appeal Not Approved; you cannot appeal Pending.

What does SASSA check when your status is Pending?

SASSA checks: (1) Department of Home Affairs to verify your ID, (2) SARS to confirm you have no taxable income above the threshold, (3) UIF to confirm you are not receiving unemployment benefits, (4) the existing grants database to ensure no other SASSA grant is registered to your ID, and (5) your banking details to confirm your account is active.

Should I reapply if my status is Pending?

No. Do not reapply while your status is Pending. Reapplying cancels your current application and resets the verification process, adding at least one additional month to your wait.
