SASSA SRD Appeal Outcome — What Happens After Your Appeal 2026

Updated April 2026

After SASSA reviews your SRD appeal, you will receive one of two outcomes: Approved (appeal successful, payment will follow) or Unsuccessful (the original decision was upheld). Here is what each outcome means and exactly what to do next.

Check your outcome at srd.sassa.gov.za — SASSA does not send SMS notifications for appeal results.

SASSA Appeal Outcome: Approved

If your appeal outcome shows Approved, your appeal was successful. SASSA has reversed the original Declined decision for the specific month(s) you appealed.

What happens next:

  1. SASSA will process payment for the appealed month — this covers the R370 grant for that month
  2. Payment typically takes 2–4 weeks to arrive in your registered bank account after the Approved outcome
  3. If you successfully appealed multiple months, you may receive the combined total in one transfer
  4. The payment goes to your registered bank account or Postbank card — confirm your banking details are correct at srd.sassa.gov.za

An “Approved” appeal outcome means payment for that specific past month only. It does not automatically approve future months — your ongoing application continues its normal monthly assessment.

SASSA Appeal Outcome: Unsuccessful

If your appeal outcome shows Unsuccessful, SASSA’s appeals officer reviewed your case and upheld the original Declined decision.

This does not mean you have lost all options. An Unsuccessful SASSA appeal result gives you the right to escalate to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

What to Do If Your Appeal Was Unsuccessful

Step 1: Note the date your appeal was marked Unsuccessful — a new 90-day window starts for the Tribunal appeal

Step 2: Visit the Independent Tribunal website at www.dpsa.gov.za

Step 3: Download or complete the Tribunal appeal form online

Step 4: Attach your SASSA appeal reference number and the Unsuccessful outcome

Step 5: Submit the form through the Tribunal’s submission channel

Step 6: The Tribunal will issue a reference number and timeline — the standard review period is up to 60 days

For the full Independent Tribunal process, see the Independent Tribunal appeal guide.

How Long Does a SASSA Appeal Take?

SASSA’s official processing time is 60–90 days from the date you submit your appeal.

During this period:

  • Your appeal status may show “Submitted” then “Under Review”
  • Do not resubmit the same appeal — it will not speed up the process
  • SASSA does not send SMS or email updates — check the portal

For help tracking your appeal, see the check appeal status guide.

Can I Reapply After an Unsuccessful Appeal?

Yes. An Unsuccessful appeal applies only to the specific past month(s) you appealed. It does not affect:

  • Your current ongoing SRD application
  • Future monthly assessments
  • Your right to apply for new months

Your application continues to be assessed every month. If your circumstances change (income stops, UIF ends, etc.), you may be approved in a future month regardless of past appeal outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know if my SASSA appeal was approved?

Check the Appeals section at srd.sassa.gov.za. Your appeal status will change from “Submitted” or “Under Review” to “Approved.” SASSA does not send an SMS for appeal outcomes — you must check the portal.

When will SASSA pay after a successful appeal?

Payment is typically processed within 2–4 weeks of an Approved appeal outcome. It will be deposited to your registered bank account or Postbank card. If payment has not arrived after 4 weeks, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.

Can I appeal again if my appeal was unsuccessful?

You cannot re-appeal at SASSA’s internal level for the same month. However, you can escalate to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals within 90 days of the Unsuccessful outcome. The Tribunal is a separate, independent body that reviews SASSA decisions.

Is SASSA’s appeal decision final?

SASSA’s internal appeal decision can be overturned by the Independent Tribunal. If the Tribunal also rules against you, you retain the right to approach the High Court as a last resort — but this requires legal representation.
