Postbank Warning: July 2026 Is the Last Month Your Gold Card Will Pay Grants

Postbank has issued an urgent final warning: July 2026 is the last payment cycle in which the old SASSA gold card will pay grants. After 31 August 2026, the gold card will be permanently deactivated and grants will no longer be paid to it.

Postbank CCO Thami Cele confirmed on 30 June 2026 that uptake of the free black card replacement has been lower than expected, with approximately 1.3 million beneficiaries yet to make the switch. Cele warned beneficiaries to avoid last-minute queues by acting during July while the process is still less congested.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

If you still hold the old SASSA gold card after 31 August 2026:

  • Your grant will still be approved — SASSA does not stop your grant
  • Payment will simply not be deposited to the deactivated gold card
  • You must visit a Postbank branch to swap and activate the new black card before the next payment can be processed
  • There is no penalty for swapping after the deadline — but you will miss payments until you do

Where to Swap Your Card

The swap is free and takes only a few minutes. You need your original South African ID (green book or smart card). Your existing balance transfers automatically. Postbank, Post Office branches, and major retailers including Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers, and SPAR are all valid swap points.

For the full list of locations, what to bring, and how to activate your new card, see the Postbank Card Swap Guide.

Do not wait. July is the last safe window to swap without missing a payment. If you are unsure whether you have already swapped, check your card — the new card is black with a Mastercard logo on the front.
