SASSA uses a one-time PIN (OTP) sent to your registered phone number to verify your identity when you log in to srd.sassa.gov.za. If you are not receiving your OTP, here are the most common causes and how to fix each one.
Why Is My SASSA SRD OTP Not Arriving?
| Cause | How Common |
|---|
| Wrong phone number registered with SASSA | Very common |
| No cell signal or network issue | Common |
| SASSA system delay (high traffic periods) | Occasional |
| SMS inbox full | Occasional |
| Old SIM deactivated or SIM swapped | Common |
| Number changed since application | Very common |
How to Fix SASSA OTP Not Received — Step by Step
Step 1: Wait 5 minutes
OTP delivery can be delayed, especially during busy periods. Do not request multiple OTPs in quick succession — wait at least 5 minutes before trying again.
Step 2: Click “Resend OTP” on the portal
srd.sassa.gov.za has a “Resend OTP” option on the login screen. Wait at least 60 seconds between resend requests.
Step 3: Check your SMS inbox carefully
Search your SMS inbox for “SASSA” or “32317” (SASSA’s SMS shortcode). The OTP message may have arrived but been filtered as spam or buried in unread messages.
Step 4: Confirm you have network signal
SASSA OTPs are sent via SMS — your phone must have cell network coverage. Move to an area with better signal if needed.
Step 5: Confirm the phone number you are entering
The number you enter on the login screen must match the number registered with your SASSA application. If you have more than one SIM, confirm which number you used when you first applied.
Step 6: If your number has changed — update it at a SASSA office
If your registered number is no longer in use, you cannot get an OTP online. See the change phone number without OTP guide for how to update your number at a SASSA office.
Can I Get an OTP to WhatsApp Instead of SMS?
No. The SASSA SRD login OTP is sent by SMS only. WhatsApp is a separate service used only for checking your grant status — not for logging in.
- SASSA SRD login: SMS OTP only (via srd.sassa.gov.za)
- SASSA WhatsApp status check: 082 046 8553 (read-only, no login)
OTP Not Received Because Your Phone Number Is Wrong
If the OTP is being sent to an old number you no longer have access to, you will not receive it on your current phone.
Your options:
- Recover the old SIM — contact your network provider (MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom) to request a SIM swap
- Visit a SASSA office — bring your original ID to update your number in person

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the SASSA OTP valid?
SASSA OTPs are typically valid for 10 minutes from the time of issue. If you take longer than 10 minutes, the OTP expires and you need to request a new one.
Can I request multiple OTPs?
Yes, but wait at least 60 seconds between each request. Requesting too many OTPs rapidly can temporarily block your ability to receive them. If you have requested more than 3 OTPs in quick succession, wait 10–15 minutes before trying again.
Why does SASSA ask for an OTP?
The OTP is SASSA’s security measure to verify you are the account holder before allowing access to your application or any changes to your details. It replaces a traditional password.
Is the SASSA OTP free?
Yes. You do not need airtime to receive the OTP SMS. The message is free to your phone. However, you do need cell network signal — the OTP cannot be delivered without it.
