To check your SASSA SRD status, you need your 13-digit South African ID number and the phone number you registered with SASSA when you applied. Your ID number is how SASSA identifies your application, not your name, address, or email.
You need exactly two things:
- Your 13-digit South African ID number, printed on your green barcoded ID book or your smart ID card
- The phone number registered with SASSA, the cell number you used when you submitted your SRD application
SASSA uses both pieces of information together to verify your identity. If either one does not match what is on their system, you will receive an error or no result.
Why SASSA uses ID + phone:
Your ID number alone is not enough to access your status because other people could see your status if only an ID was needed. The phone number is the second verification step; it confirms you are the person who applied.
Format of a South African ID number:
A South African ID number is 13 digits long. The first six digits are your date of birth (YYMMDD). For example, an ID starting with 850312 belongs to someone born on 12 March 1985. The next four digits identify your sequence of registration, digits 11 and 12 show your citizenship status, and the last digit is a check digit.
How to Check SASSA Status Using Your ID Number Online
Steps:
- Go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za (the official portal)
- Find the “Check Status” or SC19 Status option on the page
- In the ID number field, type all 13 digits of your ID number with no spaces or dashes
- In the phone number field, enter the number you registered with SASSA (with or without the country code, depending on the form)
- Click “Submit” or “Check Status”
- Your result will appear on the screen
If you get an error, double-check that you typed all 13 digits correctly. A single wrong digit will return a “not found” result.
What If Your ID Number Is Showing an Error
Identity Verification Failed: What It Means
This status means SASSA’s system cross-checked your ID number with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database and found a mismatch. The mismatch is usually:
- A spelling difference in your name or surname (e.g., your ID says “Nomsa” but your application said “Nomzamo”)
- An ID number entered incorrectly when you applied
- A problem with Home Affairs’ records
What to do:
- Check your ID book or smart card for the exact spelling of your names
- Visit a SASSA office with your original ID document to have this corrected
- You cannot fix this online. An in-person visit to SASSA is required for identity corrections.
ID Not Found: Possible Reasons
If the system returns “not found” or “no application”:
- You may be using the wrong phone number. Try other numbers you use.
- Your application may not have been submitted successfully
- You may be checking too early. Status is available from around the 10th of each month.

Can Someone Else Check My Status Using My ID?
Technically, anyone who knows your ID number and registered phone number could check your status using the online portal. This is why you should:
- Never share your ID number and phone number together on social media or WhatsApp groups
- Never use unofficial status check websites that ask for your ID, as many are phishing sites
- Only check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za or the official SASSA WhatsApp (082 046 8553)
Your ID number alone is not enough; someone would also need your registered phone number. But together, these two pieces of information can access your grant details. Protect both.
Asylum Seekers and Refugees
If you are an asylum seeker or refugee applying for the SRD grant, you do not use a South African ID number. Instead:
- Asylum seekers use their Section 22 asylum seeker permit number
- Refugees use their refugee status permit number
These numbers are used in place of the 13-digit SA ID on the SASSA status check form. The process is otherwise the same.
If your permit has expired, SASSA may decline your application. Renew your permit at the Department of Home Affairs before applying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my ID number to check SASSA status on WhatsApp?
Yes. When you message the SASSA WhatsApp number (082 046 8553), the chatbot will ask for your 13-digit ID number as part of the verification process. You cannot check your status on WhatsApp without it.
What if I have a temporary ID (DHA-9)?
A Temporary Identity Certificate (DHA-9) has an ID number on it. You can use this number to check your status in the same way as a permanent ID. However, you must also have submitted your application using the same number. If your permanent ID was issued after you applied, contact SASSA to update your records.
Can asylum seekers and refugees check status with their permit number?
Yes. Asylum seekers and recognised refugees can use their permit number on the SASSA SRD status check form in place of a 13-digit ID number. The system is designed to accommodate non-citizen applicants.
Why does my ID show “not found” on the SASSA portal?
The most common reasons are: using the wrong phone number, an error in the ID number you are entering, or checking before SASSA has processed your application for the current month (try again after the 10th). If the problem persists after the 15th of the month, call 0800 60 10 11.
